The Police department has taken a significant step towards enhancing crime detection by announcing plans to integrate public and private CCTV camera systems with the existing Police CCTV network, a senior police officer revealed.
In the initial phase of this endeavor, approximately 2000 CCTV cameras from private entities, including residential areas in Colombo city, will be seamlessly linked to the police's camera network.
This collaborative initiative invites interested participants, including individuals and private companies owning CCTV systems, to connect their cameras to the Police CCTV system in Colombo, fostering a unified approach to surveillance and crime prevention.
As the project progresses, subsequent stages will focus on expanding integration beyond Colombo, aiming to connect the police camera system with cameras deployed across the entire country.
Despite the notable presence of cameras in homes and private establishments in Colombo, their current impact on crime prevention is considered minimal due to the limited number of police-operated CCTV cameras, currently standing at 176.
In response to this gap, directives have been issued to expedite the implementation of this program, recognizing its potential to significantly bolster the effectiveness of law enforcement efforts.
