A young man of Ilavalai in Jaffna who assaulted his fiancée and her mother with a sharp weapon causing them serious injuries had committed suicide by hanging.
His body, hanging on a tree in an abandoned paddy field, a little distance away from the young woman’s house was recovered by the police.
Investigations revealed that he had been in love with the young woman and that the latter had jilted him recently. Police said he might have assaulted her and her mother with a sharp weapon, probably to kill them in retaliation.
The injured, in critical condition, were admitted to the intensive care unit of Jaffna teaching hospital.
Ilavalai Police are conducting further investigations.
