Police have implemented special security measures for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations across the island, with approximately 4,500 events scheduled, including music shows and carnivals.
Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon has instructed senior Deputy Inspectors General of Police and divisional officers to ensure public safety with heightened police security.
Police have directed officers in charge to provide security at public gathering points during the festivities.
As a result, about 14,000 police officers, nearly 500 special task force officers, and 400 military personnel have been deployed for security purposes.
Furthermore, 15,806 Civil Defense Committee members will assist in organizing and coordinating these events.
