Police that officers from all Police stations across the island have been put on alert to ensure the safety of the public and to assist with any issues that may arise during this Sinhala and Tamil New Year festive period.

Police Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa urged the public to avoid engaging in activities that are culturally damaging, obscene, or insulting, particularly to women and children, or which offends any religion. He emphasized that the law will be strictly enforced against the organizers of such events and those who post them on social media. Furthermore, DIG Thalduwa stated that over 1,500 traffic police officers have been deployed in the Western Province alone to facilitate smooth travel for the public, with similar deployments in other provinces.

He also called on drivers to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, noting that immediate roadblocks will be used to apprehend drunk drivers. The Spokesperson highlighted that 124,761 drunk drivers were arrested in 2023 and reminded everyone to adhere to traffic rules to prevent accidents.

Police advise the public to lock their vehicles when parked in towns, take care of their own vehicles, and avoid obstructing other vehicles.
