Citizens urged to take precautions as high heat indices pose health risksIn a recent advisory released by the Department of Meteorology, several provinces across Sri Lanka are expected to experience a significant rise in the heat index, reaching up to the 'Caution' level.
The affected areas include Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Western, Sabaragamuwa, North-western, and Southern provinces, along with Matale and Monaragala districts.
The advisory, effective from 04:00 p.m. today until tomorrow, warns citizens of potential health hazards associated with prolonged exposure to high temperatures.
Heat cramps and heat exhaustion are highlighted as immediate risks, with continued activity increasing the likelihood of heatstroke.
Explaining the calculation method, the Meteorology Department emphasizes that the Heat Index Forecast considers both relative humidity and maximum temperature to determine the conditions felt by the human body.
It clarifies that this forecast differs from the prediction of maximum temperature and is generated using data from global numerical weather prediction models.
With the heat index expected to reach alarming levels, authorities advise citizens to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activities during peak hours, and seek shelter in shaded or air-conditioned areas when possible.
