A 53-year-old person has died after being shot by the police while attempting to settle a dispute at Padiyadora in Mawanella last night.
Police said the Mawanella Police had received a phone call reporting a dispute in Padiyadora, prompting the police officers to go to the area to investigate.
It is reported that a person involved in the dispute attacked a police officer with a sharp weapon.
At that time, another police officer fired into the air to control the situation. However, the police officer opened fire again at the individual when he attempted to attack the officer as well.
Police stated that the suspect's father was injured in the shooting and died after being admitted to Mawanella Hospital.
The deceased was a resident of the same area.
Police mentioned that two injured police officers are currently receiving treatment at Mawanella Hospital.
The suspect who carried out the attack has fled the area, and the Mawanella Police have launched a special operation to arrest him."
