IGP gives undertaking to Supreme Court on OIC transfers
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon provided an undertaking to the Supreme Court on Friday regarding the transfer of five Officers-in-Charge (OICs).
The officers, who filed a motion before the apex court, claimed that their transfers following the torching of several politicians' houses during the widespread civil unrest in May 2022 were not based on seniority.
In response, a three-member judge bench led by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya summoned IGP Tennakoon to appear before the court and provide oral submissions on the matter. The police chief complied with the order and appeared at the Supreme Court complex on Friday morning.
During the court proceedings, IGP Tennakoon, represented by Additional Solicitor General Viraj Dayaratne, informed the judge bench that the five OICs would be reassigned to police stations corresponding to their previous assignments.
