Approximately 100 Intelligence Officers from the police in the Western Province have been relieved of their duties and reassigned to security roles in Colombo.

Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon issued instructions to deploy officers from the Intelligence Service in the Western Province to undertake general duties in Colombo. This move aims to bolster security measures and curb crimes such as vehicle thefts and gold necklace robberies, particularly during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year season.

In recent weeks, law enforcement has escalated operations against underworld activities and drug trafficking across the country, deploying a considerable number of personnel for these missions.

Intelligence officers previously stationed in the Western Province have been redeployed to undertake general duties in Colombo, aligning with the police's intensified efforts against underworld activities and drug trafficking.

Responding to concerns regarding potential police collusion with drug syndicates, intelligence officers have been assigned the task of identifying and exposing corrupt officers involved in such activities. Consequently, intelligence teams have been actively gathering information about officers engaged in illicit practices.

Meanwhile, Police Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa affirmed that special operations targeting criminals and drug traffickers will persist despite the upcoming festival season.
