The Magistrate of Maligakanda has ordered a suspect, who is accused of cheating more than Rs. 80 million by promising a job in Romania, to be remanded until April 8.
The suspect, who was hiding in Maligawatta's Lakwiru Sevana housing complex, was recently arrested by investigators from the Foreign Employment Bureau.
The accused holds a license to provide foreign employment and operates an employment agency. Additionally, she was authorized to offer employment in various sectors in Romania.
However, complaints received by the Foreign Employment Bureau allege that the suspect took money from individuals promising job placements in areas where they were not permitted to work.
A total of 88 individuals, who paid money to the suspect but did not receive employment, have lodged complaints with the Foreign Employment Bureau.
Despite being summoned by investigators to appear at the Foreign Employment Bureau for questioning, the suspect failed to comply and went into hiding.
The Foreign Employment Bureau is currently conducting investigations to arrest both the manager and another individual associated with the foreign employment agency allegedly involved in this fraudulent activity.
