The Immigration and Emigration Department arrested three Indian nationals working in Nuwara Eliya restaurants, violating their work visa terms.
Acting on intelligence, the department's Investigation Division conducted the arrests at two Nuwara Eliya restaurants where the foreigners were found flouting their work visa conditions.
According to a senior department official, these Indian nationals were initially granted employment visas for a specific restaurant in Nuwara Eliya but were discovered working elsewhere.
The official clarified that work permits are typically tied to the employer, not the individual, and foreigners are expected to work only at the designated place. If they wish to change employment, their work visa must be cancelled.
The detained individuals will be transferred to the department's detention center in Welisara, Colombo, before being repatriated from Sri Lanka. These actions were carried out under the directives of Immigration and Emigration Controller General Harsha Ilukpitiya.
