In a notable case heard at the Colombo High Court involving a Chinese national accused of offering a bribe to a public servant, the court has acquitted the defendant due to insufficient evidence to prove the bribery charge beyond a reasonable doubt.
The case was presided over by High Court Judge Namal Ballale and involved Chinese National Chong Dong Sing from China State Company, formerly located at Angunukola Palassa and currently residing at No. 16/9/2 Suncity Apartments, St. Anthony’s Mawatha, Colpetty.
The accused was charged with offering a bribe of Rs. 20,000 to Area Manager Kapugama Geeganage Upul Chandana Kumara of the Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority on July 30, 2013, as a gratification to expedite the issuance of a permit for using explosives in quarry blasting at Angunakolapelessa.
The defendant was indicted under the Bribery Act, with Assistant Legal Officer Anuttara Jayasinghe representing the Bribery Commission during the trial. President's Counsel Rienzie Arsekularatna, along with Udara Muhandiramge and Punsi Gamage, defended the accused during the proceedings.
