Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles has directed an urgent investigation into an assassination attempt targeting Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon has been tasked with launching an inquiry into the incident involving a gunman attempting to assassinate the magistrate using a Type 81 assault rifle grenade launcher.
The investigation stems from information provided in writing by a government informant. The informant revealed that the gunman had made phone calls seeking a Type 81 assault rifle to "end" the magistrate's life due to certain verdicts issued by him.
The informant has also furnished investigators with details about the gunman, including contact information.
Minister Alles swiftly ordered the investigation, highlighting the potential threat such actions pose to the ongoing 'Yukthiya' anti-drug operation and efforts to combat the underworld.
