The Supreme Court (SC) has issued an order to suspend the practice of a female lawyer pending the conclusion of court proceedings against her. The case revolves around accusations that she tore and chewed essential documents related to a case, which were taken from the court safe at the Kekirawa Magistrate’s Court.
A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, made this decision while hearing a lawsuit alleging that the female lawyer violated the ethics of the legal profession through this incident.
The lawyer from Kekirawa had previously been arrested by the police after court staff recorded the incident and reported it to the Kekirawa Police.
According to reports, the lawyer attempted to chew and swallow the original documents pertaining to a case under consideration at the Kekirawa District Court.
It was also noted that a criminal case related to this incident is currently being heard in the Magistrate’s Court.
The judges panel emphasized the seriousness of the case against the lawyer, stating that such actions are unacceptable for any lawyer under any circumstance.
Consequently, the bench has ordered the suspension of her legal practice until the conclusion of the trial against her.
