The Colombo Chief Magistrate overruled a request by the Cinnamon Gardens Police to seek the Attorney General’s opinion against Hirunika Premachandra, the National Organizer of the Samagi Jana Balavegaya Women’s Wing, and 14 others. The request was related to their participation in a street drama at Torrington Square.
Senior Counsel Athula S. Ranagala, representing 13 of the suspects, argued that the Police, while performing unofficial duties, falsely accused the 15 suspects of obstructing official police duties.
The counsel emphasized that the street drama aimed to highlight the challenges faced by women in Sri Lanka due to the current situation.
Additionally, the counsel stated that they would not challenge the prosecution if it pertained to official duties, but criticized the police for bringing political motives into the case.
The Magistrate, Prasanna De Alwis, declined the police's request for the Attorney General’s opinion and instructed them to take action under Section 103 of the Penal Code. The case was adjourned until October 6, 2024.
An arrest warrant was issued for the 5th suspect who was absent during the proceedings.
The Cinnamon Gardens Police alleged that the suspects organized a procession without permission and obstructed police officers while being part of an unlawful assembly.
