Colombo District Judge Sandun Vithana issued a restraining order preventing the holding of the 22nd annual general meeting and convention of the CGR National Trade Union Organization.
Attorney-at-law Senaka Perera, representing the plaintiffs, argued in court that respondents B.M.A. Sudath Dhammika and two others, along with Union Vice Chairman S.A.P.P. Weerasinghe and Secretary Nihal Gunaratna, had unlawfully conspired to hold the meeting and convention without the consent of the members.
Senaka Perera emphasized that proceeding with the meeting would cause irreparable harm to the plaintiffs and other union members, thus seeking to restrain its holding.
After considering Perera's submissions, Judge Sandun Vithana ordered the meeting and convention to be restrained until February 18, summoning the respondents to appear before the court on that date.
The convention, originally slated for yesterday at the union's headquarters on Bastian Mawatha, Colombo, was affected by the court's decision.
