The Colombo High Court has sentenced two former police officers from the Peliyagoda Police to death for fatally assaulting a suspect in custody back in 2005.
Judge Navaratne Marasinghe delivered the verdict after an 18-year trial.
The victim, a worker at a police officer's residence, was suspected of stealing a mobile phone.
The Sub-Inspector and Police Constable were found guilty of unlawfully detaining and fatally assaulting the 52-year-old suspect.
Additionally, they were ordered to pay Rs. 1 million each as compensation to the victim's daughter. The court acquitted the other two defendants in the case.
