In 2023, the Department of Prisons generated revenue exceeding Rs253 million through agricultural and industrial activities facilitated for inmates.
Commissioner General Thushara Upuldeniya ssid that over Rs90 million was earned through agricultural therapy programs, aimed at addressing social, mental, and physical issues among prisoners.
Upuldeniya highlighted the therapeutic benefits of inmates engaging in crop nurturing, promoting positive behavior and aiding their reintegration into society post-incarceration. He cited international research revealing the prevalence of mental health issues among prisoners, emphasizing the role of agriculture therapy in mitigating such challenges.
Programs are conducted across 13 prisons located in Pallansena, Pallekele, Weerawila, Thaldena, Kurundugasara, Kuruvita, Anuradhapura, Hangilipola, Wariyapola, Wataraka, Meethirigaka, Kandewatta, Batticaloa, and Pitabaddara.
