President Ranil Wickremesinghe emphasized the urgent need to address challenges in the agricultural sector and assured a commitment to prioritize farmers' concerns in the nation's rebuilding efforts.
He announced plans for the imminent launch of the country's most extensive agricultural modernization initiative during a paddy harvesting event in Galamatiyawa village, Thambalagamuwa Divisional Secretariat. Approximately 9,000 acres of paddy cultivation, including 672 acres in Galamatiyawa village during the Maha season, underscored the region's agricultural significance.
Residents from various backgrounds converged to voice grievances to President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who promptly directed officials to investigate and provide solutions. Among the issues raised were the urgent need for a canal to ensure water supply for crop cultivation and an electric fence to safeguard farmlands from elephant intrusions. In response, plans for a comprehensive feasibility study to construct a canal and install street lights were disclosed.
President Wickremesinghe outlined initiatives to grant freehold deeds to farming families, allocate land to young agricultural entrepreneurs, and secure ample grazing land for dairy farmers. He urged officials to address these demands promptly. Furthermore, he announced plans to develop Trincomalee in collaboration with India, focusing on enhancing the agriculture industry, animal husbandry, and fishing industry.
The President highlighted the importance of creating highly efficient agricultural practices and empowering farmers to utilize small tanks to enhance crop yields. To achieve this, agricultural modernization centers and service centers will be established, supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and technical assistance from India. The President stressed the need to restore the country's past glory of exporting crops and prioritize inland fisheries and tourism.
Under the 'Urumaya' program, freehold deeds for land will be granted, with initial allocation to licensees such as Swarna Bhumi and Jayabhoomi. Surveying work has commenced on earmarked lands, and efforts are underway to resolve land-related disputes.
The event was attended by distinguished figures, including Ven. Akkaragama Wimalajothi Thera, Governor of the Eastern Province Senthil Thondaman, and Chief Secretary of the Eastern Province R. M. P. S. Rathnayake, among others, along with officials, representatives of farmers' organizations, and residents from the area.
