Sri Lanka has expressed deep concern over the tragic loss of over a hundred lives in Gaza and has joined the international community in demanding a thorough investigation into the incident, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.
In a statement issued today, the Ministry emphasized the urgent need to lift the blockade imposed on Gaza, which has severely impacted the civilian population, including women and children, by depriving them of basic necessities such as food, water, medicine, electricity, and fuel.
"Sri Lanka reiterates its plea for an immediate ceasefire and unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza to alleviate the suffering of civilians," the statement read.
Furthermore, the Sri Lankan Government has approved the establishment of the 'Children of Gaza Fund,' a compassionate initiative proposed by the President, aimed at providing assistance to the victims in Gaza. Additionally, Sri Lanka has pledged to donate USD one million through UN agencies to offer much-needed support to the victims of Gaza.
The statement also highlighted Sri Lanka's support for global efforts toward a sustainable political resolution to the conflict. Sri Lanka emphasized the importance of establishing an independent and sovereign State of Palestine, based on the borders of 1967, in accordance with relevant UN resolutions, while also ensuring the security of Israel.
