Intense winds whipped up during Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena's helicopter landing at Matara Fort Grounds caused the roof of the Matara Rest House to suffer damage.

It was reported that a substantial quantity of food and beverages at the Rest House meant for customors had to be discarded yesterday.

The helicopter touched down safely, with no injuries sustained by any passengers, including the Prime Minister, who was en-route to attend the funeral of the late Minister Ronnie de Mel.
