Sri Lanka has entered into an agreement to develop hybrid renewable energy systems across three islets within the Jaffna District, as announced on March 1st.
Minister of Power and Energy, Kanchana Wijesekera, disclosed that the Government of India has extended a generous financial grant totaling USD 10.995 million for the project. The islands of Delft, Analativu, and Nainativu are slated to benefit from these systems, scheduled for completion by March 2025.
The ambitious project entails the construction of 530 kW wind power, 1700 kW solar power, 2400 kWh battery power, and 2500 kW standby diesel power systems across the three islets. The implementation will be spearheaded by India-based U-Solar Clean Energy Solutions, as confirmed by the minister.
Minister Wijesekera took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express gratitude to the Government of the Republic of India, Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Santosh Jha, Former High Commissioner Gopal Baglay, and officials of the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka for their invaluable assistance in facilitating the project.
The approval for awarding the contract to U-Solar Clean Energy Solutions was granted by the Cabinet of Ministers in December 2023, following recommendations put forth by the Standing Procurement Committee.
