Finance State Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya has announced a forthcoming reduction in the special commodity tax imposed on dates imported during the Ramadan period. The tax adjustment is expected to take effect within the next two days.
Presently, a special merchandise tax of Rs. 200 per kilogram is levied on imported dates during Ramadan. Minister Siyambalapitiya revealed that this tax will be drastically reduced to one rupee per kilogram, marking a significant decrease in the financial burden on importers.
Moreover, Minister Siyambalapitiya emphasized that importers seeking the reduced tax rate must secure approval from the Secretary of the Ministry of Religious Affairs to avail of this relief. This step underscores the government's commitment to supporting the observance of Ramadan and ensuring accessibility to essential commodities during this religious period.
