Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon has given the green light to offer financial support to police personnel entangled in legal matters arising from their official duties.
Police Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa said that the necessary funds will be sourced from the ‘Police Legal Assistance Fund’.
This initiative stems from a proposal put forward to the Cabinet of Ministers in July 2022 by the Minister of Public Security, Tiran Alles, which received subsequent approval.
Accordingly, the newly appointed IGP has sanctioned the provision of legal aid to the aforementioned police officers through the Police Legal Assistance Fund.
The primary aim of this fund is to alleviate financial burdens faced by police personnel requiring private legal representation and other legal services in cases where legal action is taken regarding their official duties, and when state legal assistance from the Attorney General’s Department is unavailable or not forthcoming.
