Four soldiers working as sports instructors at the Dombagoda Army Camp in Horana have been arrested for questioning regarding the mysterious death of a fellow soldier found in a pond at the camp.

The arrests were made based on suspicions of concealing information about the soldier's death and providing contradictory statements during interrogation and the magistrate's investigation.

The deceased soldier, 24-year-old Tarindu Lakshan, a sports instructor of the Military Equipment Corps residing in Ethili wewa, was found dead on January 27.

According to police, the deceased and the four arrested soldiers had consumed alcohol together in a camp room. Subsequently, they proposed to swim in the camp's pond. Investigations revealed that the deceased soldier handed his mobile phone to the others before swimming in his underwear, where he reportedly drowned.

The soldier's failure to appear for the physical exercise parade on the 28th day prompted the army to notify his family of his disappearance.

The four arrested soldiers are scheduled to be presented before the Magistrate's Court.
