Following an extensive six-month manhunt, the Police Special Task Force apprehended an individual who had escaped from Galle Prison last year.
The suspect, previously convicted of burglary and theft, managed to evade custody on August 18, 2023, while being transported back from Karapitiya Hospital, still in handcuffs.
In February 2024, during a routine operation in Balapitiya, STF officers conducted a vehicle check and successfully detained the suspect. Upon searching him, authorities discovered 2 grams of heroin, a prohibited knife, and a cache of jewelry in his possession.
Following the arrest, an unexpected incident occurred as the suspect allegedly inflicted injuries on himself by striking his head against a glass door at the police station. Subsequently, he was admitted to Balapitiya Base Hospital for medical treatment.
