Senior DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon has been appointed as the 36th Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Sri Lanka.
Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police and Acting Inspector General of Police, Deshbandu Tennakoon has been appointed as the new Inspector General of Police.
This appointment, in compliance with the stipulations outlined in Articles 41C.(1) and 61E.(b) of the Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, has been made pursuant to the authority vested on President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Secretary to the President Mr. Saman Ekanayake presented the official appointment letter to Mr. Deshbandu Tennakoon this afternoon (26) at the Presidential Secretariat.
Deshabandu Tennakoon joined the police service in 1998 as an apprentice Assistant Superintendent of Police. He was promoted to the posts of Superintendent of Police in 2006, Senior Superintendent of Police in 2011, and Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) of Police in 2015.
In November 2019, he was appointed as the Acting Senior Deputy Inspector-General of Police and was promoted to the post of SDIG on 1st of January 2020.
He has been serving as the SDIG in charge of the Western Province for more than three years.
He was Born in 1971, received his education from Nalanda College Colombo in Colombo. He is an alumnus of Colombo University and Kelaniya University where he obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees respectively.
