In a collaborative effort between wildlife conservators from the Anuradhapura wildlife office and local villagers, a she elephant and her calf, who had fallen into a farm well at Siyambalapathana in Anuradhapura, were rescued after being stranded for approximately two days.
The she elephant, estimated to be around 30 years old, was accompanied by her three-year-old calf during the ordeal. With the assistance of a backhoe, officials dug a trench resembling a track from the bottom of the well, allowing the two elephants to climb out to safety.
Following their rescue, the she elephant and calf were guided into a nearby forest reserve, ensuring their return to their natural habitat.
Residents of the area reported that a herd of approximately 50 elephants had been frequently visiting the region in search of food and water, resulting in extensive damage to cultivated land.
