The Meteorology Department has issued a caution-level heat weather advisory, particularly targeting the North-Western and North-Central Provinces, as well as Gampaha, Colombo, Hambantota, and Trincomalee districts in Sri Lanka.
According to the department's heat index, regions including Anuradhapura, Trincomalee, Puttalam, Kurunegala, Polonnaruwa, Gampaha, and Colombo Districts are expected to experience hot weather conditions.
In the cautionary advisory, the department warned that prolonged exposure and activity under such conditions could lead to fatigue and potentially result in heat cramps. Additionally, continued activity in extreme heat or sun exposure may escalate to heatstroke, posing significant health risks.
The public has been advised by the Meteorology Department to prioritize hydration and take frequent breaks in shaded areas. Furthermore, individuals are urged to check on elderly and sick members of their communities, ensuring they remain indoors and are adequately cared for. Parents are cautioned against leaving children unattended and are encouraged to dress them in lightweight, white, or light-colored clothing to mitigate heat-related risks.
The heat index forecast provided by the Meteorology Department is meticulously calculated using factors such as relative humidity, maximum temperature, and the perceived impact on the human body.
