Sri Lanka and Vietnam have sealed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at bolstering cooperation in agriculture, with a focus on technology exchange and sectoral development.
Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industry Mahinda Amaraweera engaged in bilateral talks with Vietnam's Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Minh Hoan Le, on the sidelines of the 37th Asia Pacific Conference hosted by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.
The MoU encompasses various facets of agricultural collaboration, including technology exchange, research initiatives, sharing of expertise, enhanced seed production, utilization of fertilizers and pesticides, and capacity building for farmers and officials to optimize agricultural output.
Expressing satisfaction over Sri Lanka's achievement in achieving self-sufficiency in rice production, Vietnam's Agriculture Minister praised Sri Lanka's agricultural potential, particularly during challenging economic times.
Minister Amaraweera countered misconceptions about Sri Lanka facing a food shortage amidst economic difficulties, highlighting the resilience of Sri Lankan farmers and the government's measures that prevented a food crisis. He urged the public to acknowledge and appreciate the contributions of Sri Lankan farmers.
