The Meteorology Department of Sri Lanka has raised concerns as temperatures surge across the country, prompting a 'Caution' level heat warning for various areas, including parts of the North-Western province, Gampaha, Colombo, Hambantota, and Moneragala Districts.
The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre has issued a Heat Index Advisory, indicating that the temperature felt by individuals could escalate to 'Caution' level in the aforementioned regions. With temperatures ranging between 39-45 degrees Celsius, residents are cautioned about potential fatigue and heat-related illnesses, such as heat cramps, especially with prolonged exposure and physical activity.
Authorities are urging citizens to prioritize hydration and take frequent breaks in shaded areas, particularly those engaged in outdoor work. Special attention is directed towards vulnerable groups, including the elderly and the sick, advising caregivers to monitor their well-being closely.
Furthermore, the public is advised to refrain from leaving children unattended in parked vehicles, as the interior temperatures can quickly become dangerously high. Limiting strenuous outdoor activities, seeking shelter from direct sunlight, and wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing are recommended measures to mitigate the effects of the heatwave.
