The government has recently issued a notification announcing a hike in the special commodity levy imposed on various essential commodities, including black grams, green grams, cowpeas, maize, Kurakkan, and millet.
According to the notification, the special commodity levy on black grams (skinned, either split or not) has surged to Rs. 300 per kilogram.
Similarly, the tax on green grams, cowpeas, Kurakkan (seeds), Kurakkan (other), millet (seeds), and millet (other) has been elevated from Rs. 70 to Rs. 300 per kilogram.
Moreover, a special commodity levy of Rs. 25 has been introduced for maize.
The directive specifies that the revised levy rates will be effective from February 20th until December 31st, 2024.
Furthermore, the communiqué highlights that the importation of maize, black grams, green grams, and Kurakkan is permissible based on recommendations provided by the Agriculture Ministry.
