Sri Lanka's tourism industry is experiencing an unprecedented surge, with over 138,000 international visitors exploring the island nation in just the first 18 days of February.
This remarkable figure has already surpassed last year's total for the entire month, according to data from the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA). If this trend continues, Sri Lanka is on track to exceed 200,000 visitors for the third consecutive month.
The daily arrival average has surged to 7,707, with a weekly arrival rate of approximately 53,000 for February thus far. Notably, visitors have entered the country via both air and sea routes during the initial two weeks of the month.
Russia has emerged as the leading source market for Sri Lanka tourism in February, contributing 14 percent of total tourist arrivals. However, industry sources indicate that the income generated from this segment has not met expectations. India follows closely behind as the second largest tourist traffic generator, accounting for 13 percent of arrivals, while the United Kingdom ranks third with 10 percent of arrivals.
According to SLTDA reports, the majority of tourists visit Sri Lanka for leisure purposes, with a smaller portion traveling for business. Efforts to promote Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism are underway, as this segment tends to spend nearly three times more compared to leisure travelers, despite smaller numbers.
