The Cabinet has made a significant decision to conduct legal proceedings and maintain records in English in certain courts.
This decision stems from the recognition that English is predominantly used in commerce-related activities, leading to considerable costs and time spent translating content into Sinhala.
This translation delay has prolonged the settlement of commercial disputes, adversely impacting entrepreneurs and hindering Sri Lanka's position in the Ease of Doing Business ratings.
To address these challenges, the Cabinet has proposed empowering the Minister of Justice with Cabinet approval, to issue an order permitting the use of English in recognized courts and legal records, in line with constitutional provisions.
The approved proposal aims to streamline legal processes and enhance the business environment in Sri Lanka.
