An international atomic energy expert has underscored the critical importance of establishing a robust legal framework before embarking on nuclear energy projects in Sri Lanka.
Dr. Halil Avci, a consultant and expert on nuclear energy from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), shared this perspective during a recent forum attended by local environment authorities and atomic energy officials.
Highlighting the complexity of nuclear energy projects, Dr. Avci emphasized that countries must carefully consider various factors, with legal groundwork being paramount. "A country has to first decide whether it is to adopt nuclear power generation projects and consider various environment and other factors. But if they do, then there should be a firm legal background," stated Dr. Avci.
The forum aimed to raise awareness about the essential elements of conducting an environment feasibility study before implementing nuclear power generation projects. Key figures such as Venura Fernando, Chairman of the Central Environment Authority (CEA), Prof. S.R.D. Rosa, Chairman of the Atomic Energy Authority, and P.B. Hemantha Jayasinghe, Director General of the CEA, along with representatives from 17 stakeholders in the environment and atomic energy sector, participated in the discussions.
Dr. Avci's insights serve as a timely reminder of the meticulous planning and legal considerations necessary for any potential nuclear energy endeavors in Sri Lanka.
