The Galle Additional Magistrate Lakmini Vidanagamage ordered Russian tourist Loskotu Alexander to pay Rs. 1.78 million in damages to the Railways Department for recklessly driving his car into a railway level crossing, causing extensive damage to a train and the signal system. Additionally, he was fined Rs. 56,000 for the traffic violation.
The incident occurred on January 23, 2023, when Alexander, accompanied by another passenger, disregarded an approaching train and attempted to cross the level crossing, resulting in a collision with the Maho-bound express from Beliatta. Both Alexander and the passenger sustained injuries and were hospitalized at Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.
Police took action against Alexander under motor traffic regulations, while the Railways Department sought compensation for the damages caused to its property.
During the hearing, Alexander's lawyer informed the court that his client intended to plead guilty as he was preparing to leave the country on February 29.
