The Supreme Court concluded the hearing of an appeal challenging the Appeals Court’s dismissal of a petition regarding State Minister Diana Gamage’s parliamentary membership on Tuesday (Feb. 13).
The appeal was heard by a three-member bench of the Supreme Court, comprising Justices Gamini Amarasekara, Kumudini Wickramasinghe, and Janak de Silva.
Following the proceedings, the bench decided to defer its verdict indefinitely.
Social activist Oshala Herath filed the appeal two weeks after his petition against the State Minister’s parliamentary seat and citizenship was dismissed by the Appeals Court.
Herath named Gamage and several others as respondents in his appeal, alleging that Gamage is unqualified to hold a position in Sri Lanka's parliament due to holding dual citizenship.
However, the Appeals Court's three-member judge bench delivered a split decision on October 31, 2023, ultimately dismissing the petition, subject to a fee.
