Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles said that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested an individual who slandered on social media.
Speaking at a program aimed at educating community police committee members of the Panadura Division, the minister disclosed that the suspect possessed approximately Rs. 400,000 at the time of arrest.
He further asserted that the suspect had conducted smear campaigns with the backing of a politician.
"A person has been detained by the CID for slandering us online via social media. The suspect received financial support from a politician. He was arrested shortly after attempting to exchange dollars for Sri Lankan rupees in Fort.
He said social media platforms are exploited to defame them, the government, the Acting IGP, and others.
The minister highlighted the introduction of the Online Safety Bill by the government to curb such misconduct.
The minister emphasized that the Online Safety Bill targets only those who misuse social media.
