Sixty-six Sri Lankan workers, previously employed at two apparel factories in Jordan, have returned to Sri Lanka following the sudden closure of the factories. The factories, operated by Indian investors under the names "Aseel" and "High Apparel," ceased operations without prior notice to the employees.
Reports indicate that the returning workers, who arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake early this morning (February 9th), received their overdue salaries and other entitlements before their repatriation.
The Sri Lankan Embassy in Jordan has stated that another group of Sri Lankan workers from the same factories will be repatriated to Sri Lanka within the next two days. This follows a similar repatriation effort in January, where 41 Sri Lankans were brought back to the island after receiving their salary dues and social security claims. The embassy facilitated these repatriations in collaboration with the factory management and Jordanian authorities.
Moreover, the embassy revealed that 30 former factory workers had been re-employed at other garment factories in Jordan with their consent, highlighting ongoing efforts to support Sri Lankan workers affected by the closure of the "Aseel" and "High Apparel" factories in Jordan.
