A three-wheeler driver, visibly intoxicated, attempted to assault Senior Superintendent of Police Sudath Masinghe and his police driver in front of a local supermarket in Embilipitiya.
The SSP, accompanied by his driver PC Jesudasan in civilian attire, had stopped at the supermarket for essential items in their official vehicle.
As they were leaving the parking area, the three-wheeler blocked their path. When the constable requested the driver to move, he instead approached and assaulted the police driver. Upon the SSP's intervention, identifying himself as a law enforcement officer, the assailant became verbally abusive and aggressive. Recognizing his intoxicated state, the SSP moved to detain him, but the individual resisted, even biting the SSP's hand. When the police driver attempted to intervene, he too was bitten and injured.
The SSP promptly arrested the assailant, later identified as a 33-year-old resident of Thunkama, Embilipitiya, and transferred him to Embilipitiya Police custody.
During the arrest, police discovered a razor knife in his possession. Further investigation revealed his past involvement in the military, where he faced accusations of a murder during a music show in Kuttigala, leading to his dismissal from service.
Due to injuries sustained during the altercation, the suspect was admitted to Embilipitiya Hospital under police supervision. Police have notified the Embilipitiya Magistrate’s Court of the incident for legal proceedings.
