An employee of the Maharagama Apeksha Hospital has assaulted its Administrative Officer with a fish cleaver within the hospital premises, resulting in severe injuries, police said.
They said, upon the attack, several hospital staff intervened, prompting the assailant to flee the scene. The perpetrator, a former kitchen worker at the hospital, utilized a 1.5-foot-long fish cleaver in the assault, causing serious harm to the Administrative Officer's left hand. Subsequently, the injured officer underwent immediate surgery, hospital sources said.
Police investigations uncovered that the assailant had previously worked in the hospital's kitchen and was reassigned to Ward No.24 due to misconduct, which likely triggered the attack. The fleeing suspect, identified as a resident of Pannipitiya, prompted the deployment of a specialized police unit to apprehend him.
Meanwhile, the injured Administrative Officer, post-surgery at Apeksha Hospital, was transferred to Kalubowila Teaching Hospital for further medical care, as informed by the hospital spokesperson.
The Maharagama Police are investigating.
