A 21-year-old businesswoman has filed a complaint with Hanwella Police alleging that an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), while in uniform, assaulted her with mangoes and a price display board. The victim, identified as T. Uddika from Alelanda, Dombagahawela, Moneragala, was subsequently admitted to Salawa Hospital for treatment, according to police sources.
According to the complaint lodged on Thursday (1), the incident occurred when the businesswoman visited a fruit shop in the Wanahagoda area on the Colombo road in Avissawella to purchase mangoes. It is alleged that the ASP struck her with mangoes and the price display board, and later pushed the weighing scale towards her during a dispute over mango prices. As a result, the police have issued a forensic medical form to the victim.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect is an Assistant Superintendent of Police attached to the Seethawaka Division.
Hanwella Police have launched an investigation into the matter.
