The Court of Appeal granted permission today (01) to withdraw three petitions filed against former state minister Sanath Nishantha, accusing him of contempt of court.
These petitions were brought before the Appeal Court Bench, presided over by judges Sobitha Rajakarana and Dhammika Ganepola.
Representing the petitioners, the lawyers presented the case to the court and requested withdrawal, citing the passing of respondent Sanath Nishantha. They argued that maintaining these petitions was unnecessary.
The court accepted the plea and allowed the withdrawal of the petitions.
The Sri Lanka Judicial Officers Association and two lawyers, Priyalal Sirisena and Vijitha Kumara, filed these petitions. They alleged that Sanath Nishantha had disrespected the court by commenting on the actions of magistrates regarding bail for activists during a press conference held at the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna office in August 2022.
