Three individuals were arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport's cargo terminal in Katunayake while attempting to clear eight parcels containing heroin sent from Pakistan, purportedly containing towels.
Sri Lanka Customs revealed that the parcels actually held 10.5 kilograms of heroin, with an estimated street value of around Rs. 270 million.
The heroin-laden consignment, sent from Lahore, Pakistan, arrived at BIA's air cargo terminal on November 10 via an Oman Air flight. Addressed to a goods importing company in Thihariya, Nittambuwa, the cargo was intercepted during inspection.
A 43-year-old resident of Colombo 05, who arrived at Katunayake Airport last night to claim the cargo, was arrested when the heroin was discovered upon inspection. The Customs Narcotics Control Unit and Customs officers at the Air Cargo Terminal also arrested two wharf clerks attempting to clear the cargo.
The seized heroin and the three suspects have been handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) at Katunayake Airport for further investigations.
