In response to the ongoing shortage of sugar in the local market, the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has decided to remove the maximum retail price (MRP) that was previously imposed on the product.
This decision was announced through a Gazette Extraordinary issued by CAA chairman Shantha Niriella on November 21.
Effective immediately, the previous gazette notification from November 3, 2023, which implemented price controls on sugar, has been revoked.
Under the previous regulations, the MRP for 1kg of packed white sugar was set at Rs. 295, while unpackaged white sugar had an MRP of Rs. 275.
Besides, packed brown sugar was required to be sold at Rs. 350 per kilogram, while unpackaged brown sugar had an MRP of Rs. 330.
With the lifting of these price controls, it remains to be seen how the market will respond to the sugar shortage and if prices will stabilize or fluctuate in the coming days
