Sri Lanka Customs intercepted a package containing illicit substances, including 'Kush' cannabis and cocaine, with an estimated value exceeding Rs 60 million. The contraband had been dispatched from the United States to Sri Lanka through a courier service.
Customs officials from the Revenue Inspection Unit uncovered the narcotics concealed within sealed cans of food items inside the parcel. The seized substances comprised over 500 grams of cocaine and 5.16 kilograms of marijuana, amounting to an approximate street value of Rs. 66,940,000, as reported by Sri Lanka Customs.
In connection with this discovery, two individuals have been apprehended, one of whom is a 46-year-old resident of Wellamptiya. This individual, who arrived to collect the parcel on behalf of the intended recipient—a woman residing in the Gampaha area—revealed during interrogation that an Assistant Superintendent of Customs, assigned to duty at the relevant courier company, was also involved in the illicit operation.
Following this revelation, the Customs officer implicated in the racket was arrested for further investigation. The seized narcotics and the two suspects were subsequently handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) for further legal action.
