Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa today disclosed that Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) president Shammi Silva lodged a complaint with the International Cricket Council (ICC), alleging undue interference by the Sports Ministry. Premadasa claimed that these alleged interferences led to the ICC's ban on Sri Lanka Cricket.
Addressing Parliament, Premadasa presented the letter sent to ICC Chairman Greg Barclay on August 28, 2023. The communication outlined five serious allegations and an additional point against the Sports Ministry. The accusations included claims that the Director of Sports exerted improper influence on cricket tournaments, the Sports Ministry secretary sought salaries for SLC office bearers, the Sports Minister influenced the LPL tournament's permission, influenced the drafting of the SLC Constitution, and leaked the draft audit report.
Additionally, the letter asserted that the Sports Minister influenced the SLC to contribute 20 percent of its funds to the National Sports Fund. The Opposition Leader highlighted these concerns in Parliament, shedding light on the alleged actions that triggered the ICC ban on Sri Lanka Cricket.
