Sri Lanka's tourism industry is experiencing a remarkable performance in the fourth quarter of 2023, with a sharp increase in tourist arrivals during the first half of November, according to provisional data released by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA).
Within the first 15 days of November, a total of 74,664 tourists arrived in Sri Lanka, marking the highest number recorded for the first two weeks throughout the entire year. The previous highest arrival number within the same time period was in March 2023, with 60,882 international visitors.
This surge in arrivals translates to 36 percent of the SLTDA's target for November being achieved already. The authority had projected tourist arrivals for the month to reach 204,114.
To meet this target, Sri Lanka aims to attract at least 129,450 international visitors in the remaining 15 days of November, equivalent to an average of 8,630 tourists per day.
Furthermore, the daily arrival average has risen to 4,977, the highest recorded for the same period this year. This figure represents an increase from the average of 3,500 arrivals seen in October.
With the upward trend in November's arrivals, the cumulative tourist arrival count from January 1 to November 15 has reached 1,200,119, generating an income of US $1.59 billion.
Sri Lanka has set a target of attracting at least 1.55 million international tourists in 2023, generating a revenue of US $2.5 billion. The Tourism Ministry and SLTDA have expressed confidence in exceeding this target, although industry stakeholders believe it may be missed by a small margin.
During November, India tops the list as the largest contributor to tourist traffic, accounting for 18 percent of total arrivals in Sri Lanka. The Russian Federation ranks second, with 17 percent of arrivals, while Germany holds the third position, contributing to 10 percent of arrivals.
Other key markets include the United Kingdom, Australia, China, and the United States.
