A Parliament Committee has recently decided to enforce the mandatory installation of CCTV cameras in passenger buses. The Sectoral Oversight Committee on Energy & Transport, convened in Parliament, made this significant decision during its recent meeting.
Committee Chairman Nalaka Bandara Kottegoda has further directed officials to require GPS technology when issuing route permits for passenger buses.
During the meeting, police officers emphasized the importance of having CCTV cameras in passenger buses. Consequently, the Committee Chairman instructed officials to take immediate measures to install CCTV cameras in buses.
Additionally, the Committee revealed that a considerable number of expressways in Sri Lanka are currently operating at a loss. Interestingly, it was noted that the profitable expressways are subsidizing the maintenance costs of the loss-making ones. In response to this, the Chairman instructed officials to develop an efficient method for toll payment at all expressways, utilizing a QR code.
