Following significant rainfall in the catchment areas of the Deduru Oya Basin, the Irrigation Department has announced that water is being discharged from the Deduru Oya reservoir at a rate of 16,800 cubic feet per second.
Furthermore, the department has expressed the possibility of increasing the spill discharge from the reservoir. Considering the current situation and analyzing the river water levels at hydrological stations in Deduru Oya, experts have raised concerns about the potential for a minor flood in the low-lying areas of the Deduru Oya valley.
Specifically, the areas of Wariyapola, Nikaweratiya, Mahawa, Kobeigane, Bingiriya, Pallama, Chilaw, Arachchikattuwa, and Rasnayakapura D/S divisions are at risk. Local residents residing in these areas, as well as motorists passing through, are urged to remain vigilant and pay close attention to this situation.
The possibility of a minor flood occurring in these low-lying regions necessitates precautionary measures to ensure the safety of individuals and their properties.
