Thanks to heavy rainfall, all reservoirs now have a water capacity that surpasses 50%, according to Eng. S.P.C. Sugeeshwara Bandara, the Director of Irrigation (Hydrology). Bandara informed the media that some reservoirs have already begun to spill over, while others are on the verge of doing so.
At the Deduru Oya reservoir, six spill gates have been opened to a height of three feet, releasing water at a rate of 11,200 cubic inches per second. This will result in an increase in water levels in the low-lying areas of Deduru Oya, prompting residents downstream to remain vigilant for potential flash floods.
Additionally, the water level in the Attanagalu Oya has reached its spill level, leading to minor flooding in the Attanagalla, Gampaha, Ja-Ela, and Katana divisional secretariat divisions.
The extent of the current minor flood situation may escalate based on this evening's rainfall.
